Is PGD Safe & Reliable?
PGD is a safe and reliable procedure that is usually performed by experienced fertility personnel. Removal of one cell from the embryo for blastomere biopsy does not cause any defects to the embryo, nor does it cause any future potential harm to the baby. On the contrary, it increases the likelihood of delivering a healthy baby by reducing embryo abnormalities.
The accuracy of PGD depends on the techniques and procedures involved (Lewis et al., 2001). Technical limitations may result in a misdiagnosis. PGD accuracy for determining the sex of the baby is about 99%, whereas for other conditions, its accuracy can even be below 90%. Nevertheless, as with any pregnancy, patients who conceived after PGD are still advised to undergo routine prenatal testing.
