What is Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)?Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is an advanced reproductive technique used to identify genetic defects in embryos created through in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Following this, only embryos that are tested normal are transferred into the uterus for implantation.
Why PGD?Because only unaffected embryos are transferred, PGD improves the likelihood of a successful pregnancy and the birth of a normal baby. PGD also provides a viable alternative to current post-conception diagnostic procedures such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling. This eliminates the dilemma of deciding on pregnancy termination as a result of carrying an abnormal fetus. |
